January 23, 2015 Friday Parent Letter

January 23, 2015

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Happy Friday!  We have had a busy week preparing for the end of our 3rd Marking Period. The third marking period ends next Thursday, January 29thRecords Day is Friday, January 30th students have a “brain break”.  Report cards will be sent home Friday, February 6, 2015.

We had 27 4th-6th grade students as special guests attend Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) Martin Luther King dinner reception and program!  The Keynote speaker was notable Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, President, University of Maryland, BaltimoreCounty.  His talk focused on the importance of education, especially reading and math.  Dr. Hrabowski specializes in the STEM field.

Dr. Hrabowki gave our students the following problem to solve:  There were 29 children; 20 children had dogs and15 children had cats.  How many children had both?  The problem requires higher level thinking applications.  I encourage you to try and solve the equation with your children.  Remember the fun is trying different solutions and explaining your thought process.

We had numerous calls today inquiring if we were closed.  We aren’t on the Flint School District schedule.  We have days in common for winter and spring break, however we follow our own calendar.  If you lost your calendar and need a replacement please stop by the office.  Our school calendar can also be found on the website;

The word homeless typically does not bring to mind images of children and youth, but the reality is many homeless people are under the age of 18. If you are experiencing a temporary or inadequate living situation due to loss of housing, your child might be eligible for certain educational rights and services.
