Welcome to Black History Month!

This month, we have had a lot of exciting things scheduled. For example, 6th graders created viking ships made from tissue boxes, Styrofoam cups, straws and construction paper. It took students almost two weeks to complete. I will post pictures soon.

During our Black History Program, students were able to speak to a professional singer Shevawn Bell and professional actress Sabrina McPherson through Google Hangout. Students had the opportunity to listen to their stories and receive inspirational information on pursuing a career in television and the music industry. Shevawn even performed a song for the kids in which they really enjoyed. Sabrina also did a superb job. I am going to try to get other influential African-Americans to speak to students at least once a week.

Students have a book report that is due February 28th, 2017. Your student has received the outline and rubric for the assignment. Another book report assignment will be ready for students to take home March 1, 2017.

Below is a link to our social studies book that students are required to read daily. 5th grade students are currently working on the 13 colonies while the sixth grade students are working on Canada. I have some pretty amazing projects for each grade, so stay tuned.

In closing, I am a pretty open person and believe that communication between the parent and the teacher is essential for student growth. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the school phone: 810-600-6466.

Thank you for all your support,

J. Garcia…
